Root of Cyathula officinalis Kuan (Amaranthaceae). Root of Strobilanthes forrestii Diels [Pteracanthus forrestii (Diels) C. Y. Wu] (Acanthaceae).
Expelling stasis and dredging meridians; smoothing joint movement; facilitating urination to relieve stranguria. Promoting blood circulation to dredge collaterals; clearing away heat to promote water discharge.
Rheumatism; haematuria; amenorrhoea; abdominal mass. Amenorrhoea, abdominal mass, weakness and pain in loin and knees, painful urination.
Top grades are strong, pliable; with few branches; cut surfaces light yellow. No specific standard.

Wen Niu Xi (Radix Strobilanthis Forrestii) is the confused species of Chuan Niu Xi (Radix Cyathulae). Chuan Niu Xi is mainly distributed in Sichuan, while Wen Niu Xi, which has another name, “Chuan Niu Xi”, is distributed in Hu Bei and Sichuan. The sources and functions of these herbs are totally different and careful differentiation should be made before use.
