Radix et Rhizoma Gentianae

1 Outer surface pale yellow or yellowish-brown; with a bitter taste.

2 Rhizomes in the form of irregular pieces; outer surface dark brown; top end marked with remnants of caudexes.

3 Broken surface pale yellow with 5-8 xylem bundles arranged in an annular (ring-like) form, commonly known as “vein dots”.

Radix et Rhizoma Sinopodophylli Hexandri

1 Roots reddish-brown, smooth, marked with fine longitudinal striae; taste bitter.

2 Rhizomes in the form of irregular nodular pieces; each node subspherical.

3 Cut surface yellowishwhite, pith small, taking up about 1/4 of the diameter.

Root and rhizome of Gentiana scabra Bge. (Gentianaceae).		Root and rhizome of Sinopodophyllum hexandrum (Royle) Ying (Berberidaceae).
Clearing away heat and dr ying dampness; purging liver and gallbladder of pathogenic fire.		Expelling wind and eliminating dampness; promoting blood circulation to relieve pain; resolving phlegm to stop cough.
Jaundice, hypochondriac pain, bitter taste in the mouth; leukorrhoea, vulvitis, eczema; headache, flushed face, red eyes, restlessness, hyper tension; high fever with convulsion.		Rheumatism, trauma; menstrual disorders, dysmenorrhoea; abdominal pain; cough.
Top grades are thick and even.		No specific standard.

According to the C.P., the root and rhizome of Gentiana manshurica Kitag., G. triflora Pall. and G. rigescens Franch. are also used for the same medicinal purposes as Long Dan (Radix et Rhizoma Gentianae). The first two species are also commonly called “Long Dan” and the third is called “Jian Long Dan” (堅龍膽). Gui Jiu (Radix et Rhizoma Sinopodophylli Hexandri) is toxic and is listed in Hong Kong as Schedule I (Toxic/Potent) Chinese Materia Medica. These herbs are easily confused because they look morphologically similar. Caution should be paid during application.
