Mahonia bealei (For ti.) Carr. is the species commonly used for Shi Da Gong Lao Ye (Folium Mahoniae Bealei); another species, M. fortunei (Lindl.) Fedde is also used for the same medicinal purposes. Gou Gu Ye (Folium Ilicis Cornutae) was named “Shi Da Gong Lao” in the Ben Jing Feng Yuan in ancient time, but now is named “Gou Gu Ye” in the C.P. The leaflet of Gou Gu Ye is commonly known as “Ku Ding Cha” (苦丁茶). The sources of these two herbs are very different, thus differentiation should be carefully made during application.
